As a fifties’ divorcee myself I can honestly say that being single now is the happiest I’ve been for a very long time. And people still don’t believe me when I tell them I’m living my best life. I’ve dated over the last ten years, off and on, very occasionally successfully, but I’m far more at peace as a single woman. Being in a relationship now for me would involve far too much compromise. I actually like myself better single too, which will sound odd to people, I’m sure, but it’s true. There are pros and cons, of course, but overall the freedom and independence outweighs the cons for me. Horses for courses tho, hey!

Being a '71 baby I absolutely love your reminders of the 80s Lisa. My first job at 16, couldn't wait to leave school, was a Receptionist role. Pencil skirts and peplum jackets yes!!! Also my stockings (finest denier anyone!?!) cost 3 for £1 from the local market. To mention here also, half a lager & black was 47p 😁! Good times & I cannot recall the last time I wore a suspender belt & 3 for £1 stockings 🫣😉

LOVE your disparaging comments about boring weight loss journeys! I have been on one, you can even read about it if you want if you want https://herindoors.substack.com/p/my-weight-loss-journey Very interestingly though, if you look at my incredibly low stats you will see that it has by far the hight number of 'views' of any of my posts, so clearly their is an appetite for this subject! I just think us women are under a lot of pressure to look good, I actually wonder whether it is part of enjoying life, if that makes sense? We want to look good so we can enjoy stuffing ourselves at parties and on holiday!! I don't know!!

Jeremy Beadle ! The shame ! I had a white skirt suit with gold buttons and thought I was in a wham video . Also the first sighting of leggings ! And I wore leg warmers over them rolled right up . Thanks for a great read - really appreciate the time and trouble you go to to entertain us !

In full disclosure, being a sommelier, I am biased towards enjoying wine (responsibly, obvs.) I am so sick of the demonization of having a drink. Tom Gilby put up a hilarious video, natch, in response to the Steven Bartlett comment.

I was listening to the Zoe podcast at the start of the year; a neurologist with loads of specialties was the guest. The host tried, like, really, really, tried to get this doctor to say drinking is bad for you, and the doctor wouldn’t. Instead, he said in the epidemic of loneliness it’s far better to swing by the pub to have a drink and a laugh with friends than it is to stay stoically deprived of any pleasure.

Rant over!

My ‘ going away’ outfit (1986) was a pink suit with a peplum jacket and padded shoulders from Wallis. Luckily wedding dress less decade specific so can still bear to look at myself in it, as am still content with the chap by my side in tails. A lucky choice ( chap, not suit)

I love that you always have a wide price range when recommending any items such as the divorcee dresses. Why oh why then am I so often drawn to the most expensive??!!! Great read as always Lisa xx

My insta feed has been bombarded with the new weight loss pill launch coming in early July. One tiny pill a day 30 mins before eating or drinking apparently will solve all your problems if you believe the marketing. They are now encouraging commitment (and ensuring their cashflow) with 3/6/12 month subscriptions, starting on lower doses with hugely reduced cost for month 1, but increasing significantly over the subsequent months. We know they will cause and create many more problems because healthy weight loss needs to supported by sustained effort to mitigate side effects of muscle loss etc. But we live in the world of instant gratification where silver bullets and the outsourcing of responsibility are sought and revered regardless of how short term the results might be ☹️

Congratulations to Ella, commiserations to Leo, it took my son 5 attempts to pass theory test. My social media feed is also full of weight loss stories, which quite frankly, makes me reach for the biscuit barrel! Enjoy the sunshine this weekend ☀️

Congratulations to your daughter! Your Son will pass eventually. That Steve is such a lightweight. I want 7 out of the 12 dresses!

Well done Ella, fantastic achievement!

I loved my ‘80’s Topshop puffball dress and my peplum suit from Next 😆 How uncomfortable were suspenders belts ffs 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m a decade older than you but the late 80’s was absolutely wonderful, Peplum suits , stilettos all day, stockings, corsets, lunch in the pub and drinking champagne in Stringfellows until the early hours. Endless dinner parties and any excuse to get dressed up to the nines and dance with no chance of it being recorded…. And then back to work the next morning in an office where you could hardly see across the floor for the cigarette smoke! Were we just made of sterner stuff?
