Design Dilemmas
Episode 10: This week, read on for tips including whether you should switch your switches, designing a kids room that lasts, budget bedroom updates, finding good tradesmen and carpet vs hard floor.
Last week, we went on a very short but hot minibreak, leaving my children home alone to fend for themselves. You would think that at 22, 20 and 14 that this shouldn’t be an issue and really, they did quite well. Ella (the eldest) returned from her flat in Manchester for the weekend to hold the fort and, I must admit, did an excellent job, even managing to turn on the dishwasher not just once, but twice. On our return Sunday evening there were only two discarded pizza boxes on the kitchen worktop which could rank in the Guinness Book Of World Records for the least mess ever created during parental absence in our house. Unfortunately, however, Max forgot to put the bins out and there is now a full months worth of unemptied refuse in the bin shed due to my forgetting to put them out a fortnight ago. I am sure I am not alone in getting massively confused during Bank Holiday periods as to when they’re being collected - EVERY YEAR I am thrown off bin course at Easter and this year was no exception.
Anyway, the break was excellent and seeing full on, proper sunshine was heavenly. The weather was around 24 degrees which was the perfect temperature for sitting in and I managed to read an entire book in the three nights we were lazing with our friends which is very poor for me - I am usually a book a day girl but I was distracted by chat and many, many glasses of the all inclusive champagne. But Monday brought me back to normality - I am feeling excellently revived by those few days away and ready to tackle your burning dilemmas in all their glory.
So where are we this week? We are concentrating on the home and how to find reliable traders that won’t mess you about, plus whether or not it’s a good investment to switch up your switches. We’re discussing how to take a kids room through to teens and how to revamp a tired bedroom space without splashing much cash. And finally, carpet or wood flooring in a heavy footfall space and why?
