We are zooming into the very last week of the school holidays which means workday normality will soon return. I am lucky enough to have a home office and honestly, it is the most peaceful place in our house. It’s decorated entirely by me for me and is filled with things that I love, from plates I’ve collected over the years displayed on the wall to a collection of vintage oils that I’ve picked up from charity shops, car boot sales and sourced online. I’ve got a massive bamboo noticeboard that’s filled with family photographs and stacks and stacks of interior magazines that I’ve collected for decades and which I still regularly refer to now. Come 5 September, Leo will be departing the house for school promptly at 7.52 am (he doesn’t like to get to the bus stop until literally the very last second before it comes) and the only sounds in my working space will be the low volume of Radio 2 (turned down to almost zero during the Jeremy Vine listener call in section) and the snoring of the cat and the dog who like to stay close to me all day. Oh, and there will be no whiff of burning toast at midday from a child rising, only the calming scent of my desk candle. UTTER BLISS.

On the negative side, the weather will now start to deteriorate swiftly - as I write this, the heating came on automatically this morning due to chill and it’s not even the end of August - but there are plenty of positives to be gained from the advent of Autumn, although it is difficult to see them when you’re still refusing to come out of shorts and flip flops as I am. I like having a slight tan and being able to throw open the doors with no fear of freezing wind is a massive bonus. However, lighting the fire, cosy comfort food dinners (I am a bit over salads and cold food) and an excuse to update my sofa with some new throws is a small benefit. Sort of.

Okay, so back to the brief and this week we are talking about if it’s okay to fill your house with all the colours and is it okay to mix up your art styles? (no prizes for guessing my response on this one). Making the most of a square room with no features and whether or not dining rooms are worthy of their own space and how to utilise them. And finally, my own design accessory go to and I’d love for you to tell me yours too!
