First of all, HOW have we reached Episode 77? Time has flown, readers. It seems like yesterday that I dragged my blog over here to Substack but it was absolutely the best thing that I’ve ever done, not least because I now have three times as many of you to write to than I did previously. I always look forward to tackling your Design Dilemmas each week, not least because I always learn something about SOMETHING. This week it’s faux beams, a few weeks ago it was about driveway surfaces. Finding out options and investigating ideas is SO much fun and I actually feel that I have gained knowledge every week. So thanks everyone, for unintentionally making every day a school day for me writing this post!
This week, the only personal dilemma I have encountered is how to celebrate Leo going back to school and the subsequent return to routine. I love routine. Thanks to GCSE’s, Leo has been off school for three months and I have got into a habit of getting up later instead of my normal 6.45am start and it has done me no favours. As of this morning, I am back in the game and I ate the remains of a millionaire flapjack bar that I found in the cupboard plus a packet of BBQ Beef Hula Hoops (the King of Hoops) in order to mark his departure for the bus. Good times. It’s been a good week in general, with the front garden (okay, yard, really) being finished by the landscapers and I cannot tell you how happy it has made me. Prior to revamp, it was a five layer deep mess of gravel and membrane, with massively overgrown privet hedge and broken edging. Now, it’s paved in Indian stone with a sleeper border and my first house investment, a Hay Palissade bench which I have lusted after FOREVER and finally had an excuse to buy (worry not, I’ve attached it to the railings with a massive chain and bolt). The decorator is booked in in the next ten days to paint the masonry and the windows, plus the front door and window panel are being replaced in the very near future. It may be carnage behind the walls, but the front of the house is going to look shit hot.
But back to business and this week, we are discussing worktop thickness with advice and top tips from the experts at Caesarstone. We’re considering what to do if we want to plan but don’t have a house to plan for yet, plus how to make sure that a University Hall room for our child feels suitably homely and what they should take with them. There’s a breakdown of PU faux beams versus resin plaster ones and finally, The Sunday Niche Edit which today is about bedside tables under £100.
