Design Dilemmas
Episode 51: This week we're talking narrow hallway plus how to style and plan a very small patio garden. We're helping a reader with her living room, discussing rented bedrooms and affordable rugs.
Good morning, good morning and I have finished this week and started the new feeling as if Spring is finally on its way. Last week, we hit the heady heights of 15 degrees here in York and, woah, it felt good. I know it’s a massive cliche to start a Substack with a weather comment but it is really just astonishing how different a bit of sun and lack of heavy winter puffer coat can make you feel. I was even tempted to put the roof down on my car. But then didn’t, because it’s broken and the chances are that once down, it won’t go back up again without technical assistance. The drivers side window continues to fail to wind down, despite the fact it has twice been in to be fixed, meaning that I am still having to get out of the car at the McDonalds drive through to order Leo’s Chicken Selects. A full on first world problem, indeed.
Anyway, the sun is shining and life has been good. I talked on yesterdays post about clearing out the garden and I am now feeling as though it won’t be long before we are at least able to drink a cup of coffee in the morning sunshine. Although now we live in the City which means the urge to go out for coffee that is nicer than a cup of Nescafe is very, very strong. Last week, we went for an early Sunday walk around York and grabbed a coffee from a small independent coffee shop (York has LOADS of these and have now trained Joe to head for one instead of immediately queuing in Costa or Starbucks) along with a bacon sandwich. There is not a lot better than a bacon sandwich on a Sunday morning. I was vegetarian for about 18 months some years ago now and the one thing that that tempted me back to meat eating ways was the smell of perfectly cooked bacon. I was incapable of resisting the irresistible lure of a soft white buttered slices layered up with crispy rashers and Hellmans mayonnaise. You can keep your burgers and your breaded chicken buckets, it’s the bacon sandwich that has my eternal love. God, I’m making myself hungry now.
Okay, enough enough and back to the matter in hand which is today’s Dilemmas. We have a few on the list today, the first being styling small patio areas which is, coincidentally, currently also my own personal Dilemma. Next, we are tackling a readers living room before discussing how to add personality to a rented bedroom. We’re talking about styling narrow hallways before finishing with where to find good value rugs (spoiler: there are some excellent sales on at the moment).
