Design Dilemmas
Episode 44: Discussing free standing or built in storage units and sourcing ideas for small vintage side tables. Plus making seating decision, best plant positions and what I use to plan.
This week, my main dilemma has been whether or not to turn on the blow heaters. We’re renting a house with some amazing original fireplaces but they are non working, so the owners have installed electric fan ones in a couple of the rooms. These ‘faux fires’, I feel, are hugely underrated. From a distance - okay, quite a distance - you’d have no idea that they weren’t actually log burners, but they come without the need to stoke or clean. A quick flip of the button and it swings into action and even though the ‘real flame’ flicker looks better without my glasses on, the whole room is heated like a flash and it’s full on cosy within moments. BIG fan (not actually a pun, but it could be).
I’ve had my office one on daily these past days, much to the animals delight. It’s still been arctic here in York this past week, even though on first view it’s looked like a blue sky, clear crisp day. I made the rookie error of thinking the sunshine meant warmth yesterday, leaving the house for an appointment in merely a sweatshirt and coat, minus gloves, hat and scarf. Not only was it bloody freezing - within minutes my face was whipped with cold AND my hair was tied up so I had no neck protection - but there was also sheet ice on the pavements of my back route to the hairdresser and twice I almost bit the dust. Converse, my friends, are not the ones to be wearing on a frosty day. Anyway, it is due slightly perk up next week, allegedly, but Spring can’t come fast enough for me. Bring on 30 March and the lighter mornings. that’s what I say.
But enough of my moaning, back to your quandaries and this week, we’re discussing a five varied subjects which have come via my lovely subscribers and my Instagram DM box. We’re kicking off with storage - freestanding or built in? Sourcing small vintage side tables and discussing whether to combine a two seater or a love seat with a larger sofa, plus some ideas. Plus my views on the best place to position your house plants (plus how to know when you have too many and therefore need to rein it in) and links to all of my planning go to’s, from desk pads for scribbles through to scheduling sheets.
