Last year, I started an occasional Wednesday series where I looked at inspirational rooms and we worked out how and why they work. I know it will not be news to you that I have a zillion Pinterest boards full of ideas and beautiful spaces that I am currently stockpiling for when we find a house of our own to buy. If you use Pinterest, you’ll find, like me, that by regularly pinning you’ll be able to find a thread that is consistent - this is the best way to work out how to develop your core style and also to create rooms that sing to you and that are not overly inspired by what’s currently hot on the shelves and in magazines. This is so important when you’re creating a space that works for you on a long term basis, and not just for a trend cycle.

A few months ago, I did a summary of the dining room of Bianca Hall (her blog French For Pineapple is a good one) and why it works. Breaking down a room to work out why and how someone has got it right can be really helpful when you’re planning out your own spaces and hopefully gave you some ideas for decoration of your own.

It can be really hard to find a starting point when faced with blank canvas - I spent yesterday clearing the outdoor side return space of the Georgian house we are renting to try and create a welcoming space for Spring. It’s not the most salubrious of areas if I’m being honest - it’s an astro turfed patio which would not be my first choice for a seating area - but it has, like all spaces, key features which I can use as a starting point and it’s important to pick these features out. For example, it has a long foxed mirror hung landscape which makes the space feel bigger. The area is nice and wide so I can fit a small seating area AND a small dining table in without it being cramped. It also has a hedge of ivy which adds some lush greenery. On first glance, it looks like a hard sell but I’m ALL over it. I’ll report back at a later date about how I’ve made the most of it.

Anyway, back to my Saved files, and this week we are starting with a kitchen space in the home of Malcolm Begg. Malcolm writes an interior blog called Design Sixty Nine for many years and is a Lecturer in Art & Design at North East Scotland College. I have known Malcolm for many years and he is one of the most creative people that I know - he does all his home improvements himself and is also an artist, with some amazing pieces he’s created himself hung around his home. Let’s start with some photographs of the space.
