A Short List Of Things Bringing Joie
What I've watched, bought, worn, eaten, read and lusted after this week including hand sanders, vintage camo, massive chopped salads, water leaks, skateboard art and the perils of nylon kaftans.
As I write this, we are hurtling towards the end of the school holidays and it cannot come soon enough. When your own son starts saying ‘I’m quite looking forward to going back to school’ you know that enough is enough. Due to the fact he took GCSE’s, he has had an additional six weeks which means he has been at home, lying in bed until midday and asking me for golf lifts, for almost three months. I am not, however, ready for Summer to finish. Here in the UK we have been quite blessed with the weather this year which doesn’t happen often - it is just as likely to be 12 degrees and raining in York on a Saturday in August as is it to be 30 degrees and full sun which is both terrible in regard to global warming and outfit choice. Today, I am wearing a jumper with flip flops which is how I will be until it becomes cold enough to transport my feet into boots. I’ve lived in the North for twelve years now, it’s definitely rubbing off on me.
We left Leo, Max and Ella (who had come back for York Races) alone on Bank Holiday Weekend whilst we headed South to see family. I took the train due to the fact that Joe was already working that way on Friday, managed to bag a Seatfrog upgrade to first class and spent a very relaxing three and a half hours reading Grazia and faffing around on my phone. Until twenty minutes before arrival in Reading when I received a video via WhatsApp from Max showing water coming through the kitchen ceiling from the bathroom above. Is there anything worse than a home drama issue involving water? No. There is not. Anything to do with leaks has me immediately hysterical, convinced that ceilings are about to collapse, rooms flooded and baths crashing down on top of the dog.
Obviously I was on a Cross Country service which claims to have WiFi (yeah, right) so I managed to go online and apply immediately for British Gas HomeCare, only to find that they have now instigated a 14 day clear period before you are allowed to call in a tradesman (presumably to stop people like me who get leaks and then go and sign up to get someone out immediately). Anyway, I found someone and he came out and fixed it within two hours so all well, with only a terrifying water crack in the ceiling to remind us. The rest of our mini break was uninterrupted save for two calls about dog poo clearing arguments and a request for the PayPal passport for Uber Eats.
Back to business and there have been lots of things that I’ve done in the last busy few weeks as we head towards to the end of the sunshine. Here’s a little run down of what I’ve watched, bought, worn, read, eaten and lusted after in the last fortnight.
