High Street Heroes
A monthly perusal of High Street seasonal newness to find my Top 12 lustworthy items to add to your home ASAP this April.
There have been multiple shopping deliveries to my home this week. This is the norm. Sometimes, I feel as if my family could support Jeff Bezos alone, judging by the quantity of excessively cardboard wrapped goods that are received at our door ( I say ‘received’, but mostly they are just thrown at our house by a passing van). As the account holder, these are almost always addressed to me, meaning that I often open the parcels in confusion to be presented with a random assortment of purchased (yes, my Amazon account, mostly MY bank account, godammit) items, which 99% of the time are guaranteed to be related to phone care. Phone cases, phone stands to stick on car windscreens, phone wipes, phone chargers, phone screen protectors, phone ear buds. There is no phone related item available for purchase that my children have left unordered, believe me.
Joe is equally to blame. The other day, I noticed that he was building a collection of 500ml E45 bottles in his dressing area. Not just a few, but enough to moisturise all York eczema sufferers for the next twelve months, possibly even as far as Selby. A quick glance at the Amazon account confirmed that he had accidentally hit the subscription key and, of course, had no idea how to cancel it as it wasn’t his account. And don’t even start me on My Protein powders. The amount of boxes that arrive at our door containing endless pouches and tubs is extreme. Not only that, they’re f**king huge and impossible to fit in my newly organised food cupboards which means that they are simply left abandoned - non aesthetically pleasingly - on the side, leaving a powdery trail behind where my kids have made shakes with abandon in their specific My Protein shakers (which also appear to be ordered on a regular basis). IYKYK.
Anyway, enough of excessive homeware deliveries and this week, as the weather warms up and the days get lighter - my post is focusing on new season April High Street homeware. I’ve scoured my Top 12 favourite well known High Street brands to see what’s going down in the world of interiors and picked one item from each to present to you for your perusal. Here are my top finds - I post this monthly as a series so make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss it. This month? Two words. Stripes and checks.
1. Patterned Glass Jug, H&M Home £19.99
It would be remiss of me not to post about this excellent Muranoesque jug which is new in H&M. Each jug is mouth blown and therefore unique, plus you can get matching champagne and wine glasses to complete your summer table.
2. Ceramic Table Lamp, Zara Home £219.00
Ah. Zara Home, you are REALLY spoiling us this season. I was spoilt for choice with their new in loveliness, but this ceramic table lamp is absolutely glorious. Earthy tones and texture, this is the perfect room update and a huge 62cm in height as well. Trying very hard not to add to basket.
3. Buttercup Tray, John Lewis £12
The best selling scallop tray is back in the PERFECT summer soft buttercup shade and this time, it’s smaller. Ideal for serving outdoor snacks or canapes, it’s also a great price point. I have the larger green version and use it next to my kitchen coffee maker - lovely to look at but also super practical.
4. Bobbin Candle Holders, Dunelm £18
Current mood is ‘summer table’ and this pair of colourful ceramic bobbin candle holders would work brilliantly to brighten up any setting. They’re part of a collaboration with Raspberry Blossom. Again, very appealing price point too.
5. Beech Salt & Pepper Shakers, Habitat £18
I am LOVING the direction in which Habitat are headed at the moment, reimagining historic pieces and collaborating with a wealth of designers, both in house and out. These beautiful shakers have Habitat classic written all over them.
6. Striped Cushion Cover, Sostrene Grene £5.88
This warm tobacco stripe is an excellent buy, great for a budget update in your living space but also perfect for bringing outdoors once the sun finally arrives. Sostrene Grene do this type of easy to add product so well - no frills, just classic design and a good price point.
7. Set Of Embroidered Cotton Napkins, Marks & Spencer £12
There is a lot of newness in M&S Home this season but this set of embroidered cotton napkins are impossible to resist. An excellent update to your dining set up in stripes, checks and colours that are a nice contrast with your day to day tableware.
8. Bonjour Door Mat, Anthropologie £48
Yes, more pattern and you’ll not have failed to note that there is an abundance of checks and stripes on the High Street this season. I am a sucker for anything in French (one of my biggest regrets that so far, I have failed to master the language) and this door mat is right up my street.
9. Olie Ceramic Serving Bowl, Oliver Bonas £39.50
There is much seasonal prettiness on the OB website this month but this patterned servingn bowl is definitely my top pick. It’s hand thrown in Portugal in terracotta and inspired by Italian ceramics. It’s also large which is great for serving those summer salads.
10. Bold Check Throw, Heals £129
Yes, yes, MORE check but this is where it’s at so you need to get with the programme, people. This beautiful lambswool throw comes in three colourways and would be an excellent sofa update, but also perfect for adding colour to your garden set up. Or add to the end of your bed for an injection of brights.
11. Oval Platter, Mango £49.99
More Portugese terracotta, but this time in the form of a huge oval platter. With it’s uneven texture and shape, this is a beauty of a piece with multiple uses and can easily be combined with any tableware that you currently have.
12. ONNESTAD Armchair, IKEA £99
The newly reimagined IKEA classics in the Nytillverkad Collection are filtering into the stores and this armchair inspired by their 1972 GoGo series is one to grab. It also comes in an excellent green stripe but I feel I might have overstriped you all this week, ha, so here’s the red and beige.
